FAQs KiWi-L Frequently Asked Questiona

Why would I buy the KiWi-L™ instead of one of your QuickPan™ models?

The KiWi-L is primarily designed as a low-cost companion product for the latest round of easy-to-use, affordable VR panoramic software such as PictureWorks' Spin Panorama and Panimation's Nodester. However, its light weight, sturdy construction and collapsible design will appeal to professional photographers as well.

Why doesn't the KiWi-L™ have click-stops like the QuickPan™ models?

We decided to use a friction joint instead of a detent wheel primarily for cost purposes. In testing, we discovered that moving the head to the appropriate angular position was easily accomplished with the friction joint. The drag produced by the joint keeps the head in place as you take the picture and is sufficient to prevent accidental movement.

The detent-based design of the QuickPan models is a helpful time saver for high-volume work since you don't have to look down at the panhead while indexing the unit. Another factor in our decision to use a friction joint was that the latest generation of ?stitching? software is fairly tolerant in variations in the amount of overlap. As long as the overlap is roughly between 1/3 and 1/2, the stitching process will work satisfactorily.

What types and sizes of cameras will the KiWi-L™ support?

We've designed the KiWi-L to support a wide range of cameras including digital, small rangefinders, APS cameras, up to 35mm cameras with wide angle lenses. The KiWi-L is not currently designed to support large format cameras or camcorders. In general, the adjustment range of the KiWi-L™ supports cameras with a tripod mounting thread-to-nodal point distance of 4 3/8 inches (111mm) and a camera mounting surface-to-nodal point distance of 5 1/4 inches (133mm). There may be some cameras that have a unique nodal point to tripod mounting thread configuration that will not fit the KiWi-L bracket.
