How Do I Create a Photographic VR Object?

What is Photographic VR Object Photography?
Capturing Images (Equipment requirements).
Photographic Techniques & Tips

Photographic VR Object Photography.....

Photographic VR Object Photography is an innovate way to capture and present 3-D objects. Using Kaidan Turntables and Object Rigs, you 'll be able to create interactive 3-D movies of your products, collectibles, artwork and devices for inclusion on webpages, CD-ROM titles or multimedia applications. For example, you can rotate, pan, zoom and create linked hotspots on your objects, making them ideal for interactive training manuals, advertising or entertainment.

Capturing images for Photographic VR objects
You can capture real-world objects using a video, film, or digital camera. Objects are shot as sequence of photos, using a turntable or object rig to ensure proper rotation of the camera to all possible viewpoints you want are captured. In the setup pictured below, the object, an iMac computer, is mounted on a support that can be rotated. The camera is mounted on a motorized support that will rotate it around the object.

An alternative is to mount the camera on a stationary support, and place the object securely on a turntable or other solid support that can be rotated (see below).

Kaidan offers a selection of products for Photographic VR Object Photography.

Photographic Techniques & Tips
This section covers some of the issues you should consider before you begin to photograph your objects.

Backdrop
It is best to use a backdrop when photographing objects. A backdrop helps create the illusion that the object is “floating in space” and that the user is picking up and manipulating the object, rather than just walking around it. If the object is too dark to contrast well against the backdrop, use another solid color evenly lit for the background color. Then you can change the background color using an image-processing program like Adobe™After Effects™ or Strata™ MediaPaint™.

Supporting the object
Place the object on a support, as pictured above, using as small (but solid) a support as possible, so that it does not stand out in the resulting movie. Kaidan turntables and object rigs come with a variety of pedestal and turntable mounts. It’s also a good idea to use a support that is the same color as the backdrop.

Variations in color and exposure during the capture process may cause the object or the background to "jitter". "Jitter" describes unwanted motion of your object or its background in your final object movie. Photos that are misaligned in the scanning process when converting images to digital format will cause this problem. To reduce the risk of this occurring its recommended that you use a digital (video or still) camera.

Selecting and setting up the camera
You can use either digital still or video cameras for Object VR Photography. Using a video camera will give you greater control of automation but will not have the resolution of a digital still camera. Your camera choise should reflect your needs for the final Object VR movie files, a web developer may not need the resolution required by a CD-ROM producer. One tip is to always capture the highest resolution that you can both afford and deliver.

Ordering frames
The capture of images is done in order from the top to bottom (columns) of the object in repetative bands (rows) of images. Select a name for each image that reflects the sequence in which the images will be viewed. This eliminates the need to reorder or rename frames afterward. Note: Most software applications put frames in alphanumeric order.
